Technology Solutions company Proteo have launched their new ToughTouch - a lightweight, slim-line device that combines all the advantages of a touch-screen tablet computer with the ruggedness of a hand-held terminal. It is multi-functional, conceived and designed in the UK – and it’s the very first of its kind.

Proteo are market leaders in the mobile service delivery area and have a strong range of products and services which are designed to help organisations with a large number of mobile workers communicate and work more efficiently. They use mobile technology to connect people to information and business processes, and can design and build custom mobile working solutions for an entire workforce.

ToughTouch is the answer to freeing-up and co-ordinating an organisation's centralised and de-centralised work-flow, enabling efficient, mobile-working practices without sacrificing monitor ability and the sharing of vital information. It is specifically designed, from the ground up, to be the ideal replacement for the many PDAs and handheld terminals that don’t utilise the cutting-edge, smart technology and usability that every-day consumer devices incorporate as standard.

There are essentially two types of mobile workers, an office worker who is occasionally in the field, and a mobile worker who spends most or all of their working time in the field.  While the advantages for the occasional user are moderate, there are tremendous benefits for the field mobile worker in terms of productivity gains, customer satisfaction, increased efficiency and improvement of green credentials.

The Field mobile worker may include: utility and telecommunication engineers, oil and gas employees, delivery drivers, technicians for high tech or medical equipment, insurance claim adjustors, home healthcare providers, field door to door sales agents, pharmaceutical agents, and the like – so a mix of blue collar workers and white collar professionals.

Unlike an office-based worker, who would focus mainly on a PC during their working day, a mobile field user's attention, e.g., home healthcare provider or telecoms engineer, is focused on the mobile device for only short time slots as most of their time is devoted to interacting with people, servicing equipment, driving, or other tasks involved in getting the job done.

The Tough Touch and MobileWorkerFlow are aimed squarely at the mobile field worker and have followed appropriate design cues to ensure maximum usability to ensure the technology doesn’t get in the way of the job.  For the Tough Touch the large screen and lack of hard keyboard allows all interaction through a finger. The relative light weight and hand-strap means the device is easy to carry while holding a package or equipment, saving numerous trips to and from a vehicle.  MobileWorkerFlow mobile forms provide streamlined user interfaces that require minimal typing and all back-office communication is handled seamlessly.
